Friends’ lecture 2024: Ecological Civilization – Chelsea Guangzhou Garden
Thursday 18 January at 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Peter Chmiel and Chin-Jung Chen
The Guangzhou Garden was co-designed for Chelsea Flower Show in September 2021 by landscape architects Peter Chmiel and Chin-Jung Chen. The garden explores how our future cities can balance the needs of people and wildlife and be made resilient to climate change and biodiversity loss – which is core to developing sustainable ‘landscape cities’.
The Garden won a Royal Horticultural Society gold medal and was crowned best show garden. Afterwards it was given by Guangzhou to its twinned city of Bristol and is being installed at the Botanic Garden. The main structures are now in place and the planting is being carried out over the winter and spring.
Peter Chmiel is a Director at Grant Associates with over 30 years’ experience and is a leader in creative ecology, environmental sustainability and innovative landscape design. His particular interest is the promotion of design quality and technical innovation through the synergy of landscape, architecture, nature, community and place.
Chin-Jung Chen is Associate Director at Grant Associates. Originally trained as an architect, Chin is especially interested in the creation of playful experiences that combine architecture and landscape architecture and working with different disciplines.
This lecture will take place at the Frank Theatre, Wills Physics Laboratory, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol BS8 1TL. (This is where lectures took place before the pandemic.)
Lectures are free to Friends on production of their membership card. Guests will be asked for a donation (suggested £5).
