Friends’ lecture 2024: Sarawak Orchid project

Thursday 15 February at 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Simon Pugh-Jones

Simon Pugh-Jones has travelled widely across the tropical world and led the Writhlington School Orchid Project in Radstock for 30 years before retiring and setting up his own nursery with his wife, Annie, on Portland.  Many Friends and visitors will have met Simon at the Botanic Garden, notably exhibiting their orchid collection during the Festivals with his knowledgeable school students.  He  is a member of the Botanic Garden Curatorial Advisory Group and is looking forward to helping the Garden continue to develop orchids across the collections.

Simon has given us a number of lectures before but this lecture will be entitled ‘Growing cool tropical orchids – learning from the mountains of Asia and the Americas’.  He will introduce diverse cool tropical habitats and their orchids as well as discussing effective cultivation to reflect these habitats.

This lecture will take place at the Frank Theatre, Wills Physics Laboratory, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol BS8 1TL. (This is where lectures took place before the pandemic.)

Lectures are free to Friends on production of their membership card. Guests will be asked for a donation (suggested £5).
