Explore vibrant displays from Europe and North Africa, South Africa, Australia, Chile and California. See how plants have developed similar adaptations to long, hot, dry summers.

Mediterranean Basin of Europe and North Africa

The Mediterranean Basin of Europe and North Africa display has plants displayed according to vegetation biomes found in this region. These range from evergreen forest to dense thickets, rocky landscape and steppe.

South West tip of South Africa

The South West tip of South Africa display includes plantings from the region that show extreme adaptation to a seasonally dry environment. These plants illustrate rich biodiversity found in this region. Three biomes are on display: fynbos, renosterveld and succulent karoo biomes.

Western and Southern Australia

The Western and Southern Australia display illustrates the diversity of plants found in Australian heathlands. The Western Australia display works alongside the South African display to highlight how plants in the two regions have evolved through convergent evolution.

Central Chile

The Central Chile display is being developed to focus on extreme morphology and adaptation to a seasonally dry environment.

Western California

The Western California display will feature a chaparral biome, showing the shrubland or heathland plant community found in the US state of California. Forest species and a planting of seasonal vegetables will also be found here.
