Friends’ Lecture: The unknown danger: the threat of Asian hornets to western honeybees with Sam Macro Versteeg

Thursday 16 January at 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm

The unknown danger: the threat of Asian hornets to western honeybees

Asian hornets and the western honeybee (Apis mellifera) separated from one another approximately 100 million years ago and since then have evolved separately. However, with the advent of global trade these two disparate species are once again in contact…

Honeybees crowded on a comb, one in the centre blurred by movement.
Sam Macro Versteeg is a member of the Social Insect Behaviour and Ecology research group at the University of Bristol.

In this talk Sam Macro Versteeg will discuss if A. mellifera is able to pick up on the presence of the Asian hornet, how it changes it behaviour along and whether this can be followed within the bees’ genes.
Sam Macro Versteeg is a researcher at the University of Bristol, focused on the chemical ecology and behaviour of bees.
