The Jungle Garden – Philip Oostenbrink – Lecture

Thursday 16 September 2021 at 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Philip Oostenbrink began gardening at the age of four in his father’s allotment and grandmother’s garden. The jungle plant obsession took hold after a trip to Tresco on the Isles of Scilly. He is now Head Gardener at Walmer Castle where one of his first projects has been to plant a jungle garden in the moat. Philip holds four National Collections and in 2019 he and his garden featured on BBC Gardener’s World. His book, The Jungle Garden, is published on 7 October 2021.

Take the houseplant look outside by exploring the wonders of lush, green, foliage plants that are hardy in the garden. Unlike flowers which fade, these big-leaved, larger-than-life plants provide year-round impact for decades and small, urban gardens that are well protected are the perfect home for them.  Jungle gardens can be shady and immersive, sunny and open, or somewhere in between and there are plants suited to all these environments including purple-leaved bananas, desert island palms, spiky agaves, architectural Pseudopanax and succulents such as Echeveria and Aeonium.

This situation will be reviewed in the light of developments including the University of Bristol confirming that their lecture theatres are once again available.

All lectures will start at 7pm. The link to the Zoom lecture will be available for each lecture nearer the time, also from Friends enews. Please note that there is a limit of 100 people which will be on a first come first served basis with no pre-booking.
