The Gardens of the Mekong by Adam Alexander aka The Seed Detective

Thursday 19 January at 7:00 pm to 7:45 pm

Adam is a documentary producer with a passion for growing fruit and vegetables and not a year has passed since he was ten when he hasn’t grown something to eat.

In the late seventies he ran a small market garden growing organic, unusual vegetables. Trying to sell red Brussels sprouts or yellow courgettes did not prove profitable so he returned to film-making to support his love of horticulture.

Adam’s interest in discovering rare, endangered but above all, delicious vegetables from around the world began as the result of meeting a remarkable lady in a vegetable market in Donetsk, Ukraine whilst making a documentary series there. So began a journey of discovery and learning about the social and cultural relationships we have with what we grow.

In this talk Adam recounts his journey down the Mekong through northern Laos, and of the remarkable vegetable and garden plots that are created every year on its banks as the river flood waters subside during the dry season. On this journey Adam discovered a number of wonderful native and heirloom vegetables which he now grows and shares
