The Gardens of the Newt – A Journey Spanning Three Centuries
Thursday 20 October 2022 at 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Travel back in time to discover the origins of an exceptional garden nestled in the ancient landscape of Somerset. The seed of the story germinates in 1690 and grows through the centuries, blossoming in the mid-20th century during the ownership of Penelope Hobhouse, when it was still known as Hadspen, up until the present where the story continues to evolve as ‘The Newt in Somerset’. This talk explores the past, describes the present and touches on the future of arguably one of the most exciting horticultural projects of the 21st Century. “The garden looks to the future, while never forgetting its past.”
Arthur Cole has been involved in professional horticulture since the age of 19. Having been a Head Gardener in Scotland, a perma-culturalist in New York, a kitchen gardener in Suffolk and a specialist bulb grower in the Cotswolds, he is now Head of Programmes at the Newt in Somerset – a country estate with a kitchen garden, fragrance garden, greenhouse, colour gardens, cascades, a walled Parabola concealing an apple tree maze, ancient woodland and farmland!
