Lecture: The World in a Garden
Thursday 15 January 2026 at 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Mike Nelhams, Abbey Garden Curator, Tresco
Mike Nelhams trained for three years at RHS, Wisley and first went to Tresco Abbey Garden as a student and returned in 1984 as Head Gardener and then in 1994 was made Garden Curator. A Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture and an Associate of Honour of the RHS he has a particular interest in plants from the Mediterranean and associated coastal regions of the world.
His talk will look at why Tresco Abbey Garden is able to cultivate plants from every Mediterranean Climate zone in the world on such a small windswept island while sitting out in the Atlantic Ocean, alongside some of the events that have shaped the garden over its long history.
Winter Lectures will take place on the third Thursday of the month at the Frank Theatre, Wills Physics Laboratory, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol BS8 1TL. Lectures are free to Friends on production of their membership card and students on production of their student card. Guests who are not members or students will be asked for a donation (suggested £5).
Attendees can use any University car park; the nearest are in University Walk and The Hawthorns – please see map with lecture details.

We hope that as many people as possible will be able to join us in person but as we know that some are unable to travel we are arranging for most of the lectures to be live-streamed by Zoom (link will be provided nearer the time through the Friends’ enews). They will not be recorded.
