Lecture: Gardening the Globe

Thursday 20 November at 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Kate Groves, Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Kate Groves is a volunteer speaker for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which is a global leader in commemoration. Founded by Royal Charter in 1917, they work on behalf of the Governments of Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom to commemorate the 1.7 million men and women from the Commonwealth who lost their lives in the two World Wars.

This presentation gives an insight into the horticulture of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The talk covers the origins of the CWGC, looking at the early influences on their design, and how their plots and graves are enhanced by their horticulture. Included is how they maintain their sites across the world, how they commemorate the fallen with horticulture and their ongoing horticulture challenges, including those created by climate change.

Winter Lectures will take place on the third Thursday of the month at the Frank Theatre, Wills Physics Laboratory, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol BS8 1TL. Lectures are free to Friends on production of their membership card and students on production of their student card. Guests who are not members or students will be asked for a donation (suggested £5).

Attendees can use any University car park; the nearest are in University Walk and The Hawthorns – please see map with lecture details.
