Gardens of the Mediterranean – Mike Nelhams – Lecture

Mike Nelhams, AHRHS, FI Hort, Curator, Tresco Abbey Garden, studied for three years at the RHS Garden, Wisley and first went to Tresco on a Studley Trust Scholarship as a student in 1976. After managing a woodland garden in Sussex for five years he returned to Tresco Abbey Garden in 1984 as Head Gardener and then in 1994 took the post which was established for him of Garden Curator. He is an RHS judge on the Tender Plants Committee and has judged at Chelsea, Hampton Court and London RHS shows.He has published a book, Tresco Abbey Garden, made many appearances on TV and radio, as well as writing many articles for the horticultural press.

Mike has a particular interest in plants from the Mediterranean and associated coastal regions of the world and leads garden tours to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, St Lucia, South America, California, Italy and the South of France.

He has visited many marvellous gardens across the area we call the Mediterranean and will take us on a mini tour across France, Italy, Sicily and the Canary Isles looking at some of the highlights, with particular reference to the Hanbury Garden where for many years Mike has annually taken the Tresco garden team for work experience…. along with the occasional glass of wine on a sunny terrace!!

Due to the continuing uncertainty regarding Covid-19 restrictions, the Friends’ lectures will continue to be through Zoom for the autumn. This situation will be reviewed in the light of developments including the University of Bristol confirming that their lecture theatres are once again available.

All lectures start at 7pm for approx 45 minutes, followed by a question and answer session. If possible please put your questions on to the chat facility within Zoom during the lecture. Once you have been admitted to the Zoom meeting please ensure your sound is muted.
